Art and Algorithms: Conversation with Nettrice Gaskins

Speech Topics

Human Artistic Intelligence: The Cultural Power Behind Creative Expression

What makes human creativity so powerful in an age of machines? In this keynote, Dr. Gaskins introduces the concept of Human Artistic Intelligence—the blend of cultural memory, lived experience, and intuitive problem-solving that fuels meaningful artistic expression. She shows how this intelligence can’t be replicated by algorithms, and how honoring it is essential to both innovation and equity. Through powerful examples, Dr. Gaskins invites audiences to see creativity as both a technology and a birthright.

Art & Algorhythms: Coding Culture into Digital Canvases

Blending art with the logic of code, Dr. Nettrice Gaskins introduces her concept of “algorhythms”—algorithmic processes rooted in cultural and rhythmic expression. This keynote explores how artists are reimagining technology through the lens of heritage, identity, and sound. From quilting patterns to hip-hop beats, Gaskins reveals how ancestral knowledge can inform and transform digital creativity. The result is a new way of thinking about algorithms—not as cold, mechanical formulas, but as living, expressive systems.

Algorithmic Bias: Uncovering the Hidden Inequities in Code

Algorithms are often thought of as neutral, but their impact is anything but. In this eye-opening keynote, Dr. Gaskins exposes how algorithmic bias shapes everything from facial recognition to art platforms—and how these biases often reinforce systemic inequities. She combines research, personal insight, and artistic intervention to show how marginalized communities are both affected by and actively resisting algorithmic harm. Audiences will gain a deeper understanding of the hidden power behind the code—and the role each of us plays in shaping ethical technology.

Afrofuturism: Imagining Liberation Through Art, Story & Technology

Afrofuturism isn’t just science fiction—it’s a tool for liberation, imagination, and innovation. In this inspiring keynote, Dr. Nettrice Gaskins explores how Afrofuturist art, music, and design challenge dominant narratives and create space for new cultural futures. She shares how this aesthetic framework empowers historically excluded communities to reclaim the past and shape the future through storytelling and technology. Whether you're an educator, artist, or technologist, this session will expand your sense of what's possible.

STEAM Learning: Empowering the Next Generation of Inclusive Innovators

What happens when science, technology, engineering, art, and math truly intersect? Dr. Gaskins shows how STEAM education empowers students—especially those from underrepresented backgrounds—to become creative problem-solvers and culture-shapers. Drawing on her experience as an educator and digital artist, she shares strategies for integrating art into STEM in ways that are relevant, engaging, and inclusive. This keynote is a powerful call to rethink how we teach, learn, and innovate in the 21st century.
